Your novel What’s Left of Me tackles themes of love, loss, and resilience. What inspired you to explore such powerful, emotional topics in your work?

I think an author’s writing style and voice stems from who they are as a person. I personally love stories that push boundaries and make me feel. I wanted to create a story that opened the mind of readers and put them in a world that may test their limits from the normal “standard” of romance novels. There’s always the challenge to create art that’s different or more unique and for this story, I was truly inspired to tackle a topic that most are afraid of –cancer. I wanted to not only give the reader a story that shows the beauty and passion of falling in love, but also the struggles that come with battling a disease that’s so gut-wrenching. There’s something about creating a character that is empowering and shows great strength and preservation, and that’s what I wanted to give to the reader.

How has your journey as a writer shaped the way you view relationships and personal struggles, particularly when creating characters who face intense challenges?

I am introspective. I’m constantly living in my mind. My emotions and trains of thought are constantly pulling at me. Over the years of writing, I have learned to view tough situations and relationships of those around me in a more positive outlook. There’s a quote I wrote in What’s Left of Us (sequel to What’s Left of Me), “Pain is what keeps my heart alive. Pain is a reminder of the life I have to be thankful for.” Without my personal struggles I wouldn’t be able to connect as deeply as I do with my characters.

Many of your readers are drawn to the raw, relatable emotions in your books. How do you approach balancing realism with the romantic elements that captivate your audience?

I love all things romance, and I’m an empath. Bringing these two together can create a magical and compelling world. I appreciate a good love story with a happily ever after, however that may look to someone. The beauty of art is your interpretation. As a writer, I want to create art with my words while challenging myself to find ways to bring new levels of passion and steam with real raw emotion that makes one think.

Can you share any insights into your writing process—how you develop characters with such depth and authenticity?

I ask myself what their flaws, strengths, and weaknesses are. Who do I want this person to be, what do they stand for and how will this contribute to the plot. I start with the foundation and build from there. I will even take experiences from people I’ve met in life and use their influences to help create a fictional person.

What do you hope readers take away from your stories, especially those going through similar hardships as the characters in your novels?

I want my stories to touch readers in a profound way and stay with them long after they’ve finished the last chapter. Whether it’s the main character, or a side character, my goal is for readers to be IN the story and relate in some way. I want to give readers hope because they related so strongly to the character, and to know they’re not alone.
