Paige Weaver is a storyteller whose words resonate deeply with the human experience. Her ability to weave raw emotion with vivid world-building is nothing short of masterful. In her Promise Me series, she crafts a landscape where love and survival exist in fragile balance—a place where the relentless drumbeat of chaos amplifies the sweetness of connection and yearning. There is in her writing an urgency, an honesty that embraces readers and pulls them into realities both tender and tumultuous, compelling us to consider the fragile threads that bind us to others when the world around us seems to unravel.
A native Texan now nestled in the heart of Alabama, Paige embodies resilience and passion, traits that are intricately reflected in her protagonists. How did your personal experiences influence the intense emotions portrayed in ‘Promise Me Darkness’?
Promise Me Darkness, my first published book, is a post-apocalyptic romance about a group of friends who must travel home from college when the United States is attacked with an electromagnetic pulse from China and Russia, which eliminates all forms of transportation and communication and causes violence and upheaval. I have no personal experience with a world ravaged by chaos or a society without vehicles, phones, or with lawlessness, but the emotions felt by the characters–intense fear, worry, a sense of helplessness, the reliance on friends in difficult times–were influenced by different times in my life. When the EMP first hits, my characters are scared, uncertain of what to do or where to go, with only each other to lean on. Most of us have moments in our lives like this, whether it is a small and insignificant situation or one more serious. We have been fearful of the unknown and relied on friends and/or family to help us navigate when our life is in turmoil. I tapped into those emotions while writing.
What inspired the post-apocalyptic setting in ‘Promise Me Once’, and how did you develop its world-building?
The setting for my post-apocalyptic series came from many different inspirations. Movies, music, stories. For as long as I could remember, my imagination has come up with worlds different from ours. Spending summers with my great-grandparents and listening to them talk about life before electricity always intrigued me. The story and setting for the Promise Me series, began when I came across news articles about the threat of electromatic pulses, both natural and man-made. I learned the threat was real and the United States government had protocols in place if this were to happen. I thought what if this happened and we were thrust back to a time before modern conveniences. How would a group of college students react? What would society be like when suddenly we had no electricity, no running vehicles, or food that you could conveniently walk into a grocery store and buy? This was the setting for Promise Me Once and the other novels in the series.

Can you share the inspiration behind the complex character of Ryder Delaney in the ‘Promise Me’ series?
For many authors, characters hold some nugget of someone we’ve met or known. Ryder was inspired by the people I have known throughout my life and some of the stories they told me. But mainly, I wrote a main character that I wanted to read. His protectiveness, his devotion to his friends, his strength and fearlessness in the face of upheaval, his endless devotion and love of his childhood friend. These are the basis for Ryder’s character, because for most of us, if the world was ending, this is who we would want by our side.
How did writing ‘Sweet Destruction’ differ from your experience with the ‘Promise Me’ series?
Sweet Destruction, my third novel, is a contemporary romance with no apocalyptic themes unlike the Promise Me series. Surprisingly, it was much harder for me to write than a world in chaos. The Promise Me series allowed my imagination to go wild. There were no rules because I was creating the world. But with Sweet Destruction, I had to write in the parameters of today. Yes, I was using creativity, but it had the limitations of more typical everyday life. With the Promise Me series, the apocalyptic world I created gave me creative license. I loved writing both, but each challenged me in different ways.
How do you balance writing about love and survival in a world ravaged by war, as seen in your novels?
I’ve been asked this question many times. My simplest answer is inspiration from history. For example, during World War II, love and survival happened despite the horrific time. In the face of danger when a person doesn’t know if they will live or what their future holds, emotions are heightened. Chances are taken. Love, friendship, and surviving are all that matters. Knowing this, it was very easy to write about love in a world decimated by war.

What role does fate play in your storytelling, particularly in ‘Promise Me Light’?
I’m a big believer in fate. What’s meant to be will happen no matter what. As a romance writer, my characters always find each other despite the most destructive, adverse circumstances I can throw at them because they were meant to be. In Promise Me Light, the main male character finds his way back to his friends, defying injury, war, and villains because nothing will stand in his way to return to them. It’s his fate. I wouldn’t be a romance author if I didn’t give my characters their fate.
What advice would you offer to aspiring authors striving to create compelling and heartfelt romance novels?
My advice would be to write what you want to read and to not write only what is popular at the time. Pour everything your characters feel onto the page. Be unafraid.
Any other advice for aspiring authors?
Read, read, read! Don’t let others discourage you. It’s better to follow your dreams and write than have regrets.
