Issue 65

Every issue of Reader’s House reminds us that storytelling has no single shape. It can emerge from science and philosophy, from faith and fantasy, from the heat of a professional kitchen or from the most private corners of human experience. What unites the voices in our 65th issue is a willingness to look beyond the obvious—to question, explore and transform experience into something worth sharing.

Our cover author, Giancarlo Roversi, embodies that spirit magnificently. An award-winning author, musician and computer engineer, Roversi has spent fourteen years developing the extraordinary Pulstarverse, a literary world where dystopian science fiction, philosophy, political observation and original music converge. His Pulstar Trilogy explores memory, identity, consciousness and the fragile nature of certainty, while never losing sight of the deeply human emotions beneath its cosmic scale. 

Roversi’s story is also one of extraordinary personal resilience. The Pulstar Trilogy became a refuge during profound grief and the fulfilment of a promise made to his late wife. Music, too, is inseparable from his creative vision: having shared stages with bands including R.E.M., Oasis and Duran Duran, he composes original soundtracks for his books, creating an experience somewhere between literature, music and cinema.  His observation that “a single event can change us forever” feels particularly appropriate for an issue filled with people whose lives and creative paths have been shaped by unexpected turns. 

That sense of discovery continues with Steven Heap, an award-winning chef and author whose journey began in an Indian restaurant at fourteen and has taken him across nearly seventy countries. Through ten cookery books, Heap does far more than provide recipes: he opens the doors of professional British Indian restaurant kitchens, explaining the techniques, traditions and cultural histories behind the food.  His story reminds us that books can preserve knowledge just as powerfully as they preserve imagination.

Kevin M. Kraft takes us somewhere very different, combining Christian faith, cinematic storytelling, martial arts and action with stories about adversity, redemption and spiritual resilience. His creative world demonstrates how apparently contrasting elements—thrills and contemplation, physical struggle and faith—can coexist within the same narrative. 

Lisa Opel brings an equally fearless honesty to questions of intimacy, desire and human connection. Blending humour, vulnerability and practical insight, she challenges readers to speak more openly about subjects too often hidden behind embarrassment or silence. Her work turns personal experience into an invitation towards curiosity, self-discovery and deeper connection. 

And L.R. Braden transports us into supernatural worlds populated by fae, shifters, demons and magic, yet the real power of her fiction remains unmistakably human. Behind the fantasy are questions of vulnerability, trauma, belonging, healing and hope. Even when her stories enter darker territory, Braden wants readers to reach the final page with hope rather than despair. 

Different subjects. Different genres. Different lives. Yet across this issue, one idea continually resurfaces: creativity is a way of making sense of experience.

Roversi builds universes from questions. Heap turns decades of culinary knowledge into something others can learn. Kraft transforms faith and adversity into cinematic fiction. Opel finds connection through courageous honesty. Braden discovers hope amid darkness and magic.

Together, they remind us why we continue to celebrate authors and creators at Reader’s House. Great storytelling does not simply take us somewhere else. At its best, it sends us back into our own lives seeing something differently.
