Your journey to becoming a self-help author is deeply personal and rooted in profound loss. How did these personal experiences shape your writing, and what made you decide to share your story with the world through books like Healing the Broken Heart?

My journey into self-help writing began with a personal tragedy—the loss of my son, which plunged me into a depth of grief that was both overwhelming and transformative. Writing became my solace and my way to process the unimaginable pain of losing a child. As I navigated through my grief, I discovered insights and strategies that helped me cope, and I felt a strong desire to share these with others who might be experiencing similar losses.

Healing the Broken Heart was born out of a need to connect with others in grief and to offer them a voice of empathy and understanding. I decided to share my story with the world because I knew that while the pain of losing a child is profoundly personal, the themes of grief, resilience, and eventual healing are universal. My hope was that by opening up about my own experiences, I could help others feel less alone in their journeys and provide some guidance on navigating the complex path of grief.

In Surviving PTSD: The Choppy Seas We Deal With, you provide comprehensive guidance on understanding and managing PTSD. What inspired you to tackle this complex subject, and how did you ensure the information was both accessible and empathetic to those struggling with trauma?

The inspiration to write Surviving PTSD: The Choppy Seas We Deal With stemmed from witnessing the profound impact that trauma has on individuals and their families, and my own experiences with grief and loss, which share similarities with the traumatic stress reactions seen in PTSD. Understanding the challenges and the pain associated with PTSD became a personal mission, as I saw many around me struggling without the knowledge or resources to manage their condition effectively.

To tackle this complex subject, I dedicated myself to thorough research, collaborating with mental health professionals, and drawing on evidence-based practices. Ensuring the information was accessible involved simplifying medical jargon and using relatable examples and metaphors to explain PTSD’s intricate dynamics. Empathy was central to my approach—I wanted to validate the readers’ experiences and provide hope. By integrating personal stories, including my own, and those of others who have walked this path, the book aims to resonate on a personal level, making readers feel seen and understood, while also equipping them with practical tools to manage their journey through trauma recovery.

Living in Northern Nevada surrounded by the tranquillity of nature, how does your environment influence your writing and your approach to themes like healing and resilience?

Living in Northern Nevada, surrounded by the expansive tranquillity of nature, has profoundly influenced my writing and my approach to themes like healing and resilience. The serene landscapes, the quiet of the desert, and the majestic mountains provide a backdrop that fosters deep reflection and introspection. This environment has a way of simplifying life, stripping away the noise and chaos that often accompany urban settings, and allowing more space for healing thoughts and creativity.

The peace found in nature has a calming effect on the mind, which is conducive to writing that explores deep emotional and psychological themes. It allows me to connect more profoundly with my own experiences and those of my readers, creating a more empathetic and genuine narrative. The solitude and the closeness to nature also help in grounding my thoughts, bringing clarity to my writing, ensuring that the advice and insights I offer are not only practical but deeply rooted in a place of calm and centeredness.

Your books often blend practical advice with deeply personal narratives. How do you balance sharing your own story with providing general guidance that can help a wide range of readers facing different challenges?

Balancing deeply personal narratives with practical advice involves focusing on universal themes, using inclusive language, providing actionable advice, validating diverse experiences, engaging with reader feedback, and backing the advice with research and expert collaboration. This approach helps make the experiences relatable and the lessons learned accessible, aiming to reach and help as many readers as possible.
