Lyra Parish is a hopeless romantic who enjoys creating characters who eventually find love. She likes to write Texas small-town contemporary romance books (because she’s a 5th-generation Texan) and romantic suspense/dark romance. When she isn’t immersed in fictional worlds, you can find her on Youtube chatting about her self-publishing journey (The Courtney Project) or podcasting about romance books at Spread Those Pages Podcast. Lyra’s a Virgo who loves coffee, the great outdoors, authentic people, and living her very best life with her hubby. You may or may not know her from when she co-wrote under the USA Today Bestselling pen name Kennedy Fox.
What genres do you especially enjoy reading?
Thrillers and romance are my genres of choice. I also love non-fiction books as well.
What sub-genres of romance do you enjoy reading and writing?
Enemies to lovers, grumpy/sunshine, best friends to lovers, and fake dating. Eek! They’re my all-time favorites to read and write.
What do you read when you’re working on a book?
When I’m in the writing cave, I like to read books outside of my genre, like thrillers or non-fiction. My friend Meg Latorre and I have a romance book podcast called Spread Those Pages, where we buddy-read romance books and then chat about them. So when I’m in the editing cave, that’s when I catch up on my romance book reading.
Have you ever changed your opinion of a book based on information about the author or anything else?
No, typically, my opinions about a book are based on the characters and world the author created. I don’t usually follow authors closely before I’ve read their work. However, I have stopped supporting some because their views don’t align with mine. Basic human rights for everyone is non-negotiable for me, and my conscious will not allow me to monetarily support someone who doesn’t believe that.
Who is your favorite fictional hero?
I love Jericho Barrons from Karen Marie Moning’s Fever Series. He’s an OG favorite of mine and never disappoints.
What book are you currently reading?
The Hollow Vows by Lexi Ryan and The Writing Retreat by Julia Bartz.
What books and authors have impacted your writing career? Anything Becca Syme writes and publishes. Seriously, if you’re a writer, go grab every single one of them. I also really enjoyed The High 5 Habit by Mel Robbins. I know it’s not writing-related, but that book moved me. Of course, Colleen Hoover inspires me because she’s like an indie author grandma at this point. I’ve been in the romance community since 2013, and Colleen proves that dreams do come true and the sky really is the limit.
What kind of reader were you as a child?
My dad used to buy pre-teen me Stephen King books to read. I’m not sure they’re really suitable for young people, but my dad didn’t care. I also really loved YA fantasy and primarily read in that genre until my late twenties.
Which writer would you want to write your life story? Shonda Rhimes because she’s incredible and truly understands human relationships.
Name one author you think everyone should read?
Oh, that’s easy. Kennedy Ryan. She’s insanely talented and knows how to tell a captivating story that pulls on heartstrings. I personally believe she is one of the greatest writers of our time.
