What inspired you to pursue a career in the metaphysical and holistic fields, despite coming from a medical family background?

Science has never called me as it did the rest of the family.  I have always been the writer, the rebel, the one who looked for answers beyond what I was told.  (Besides, the family always discussed the mistakes and horror stories from the hospital around the dinner table.  NO, thank you.)

How do you think your experiences with breast cancer and other life challenges have shaped your approach to your work as a psychic and intuitive counsellor?

Every single thing I’ve gone through – cancer, divorce, rape, poverty, abuse, bankruptcy – has given me a deep well of compassion for others who go through their own dark times.  It has made me a better intuitive and nondenominational minister.

Can you tell us about a particularly memorable or transformative experience you have had with a client or during a reading?

It’s when I can pick up things from departed loved ones that are absolutely unique – a grandfather salutes his granddaughter, Canadian style; she had just graduated from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Academy but hadn’t said a word.  A woman wants to speak to her father in law, who then has me miming a pool cue and a pool table – he had taught her how to play pool.  These are so far beyond the usual “they are handing you a rose and they say they love you” that they are absolutely messages from Beyond.

How do you distinguish between genuine psychic ability and charlatanism, and what advice would you give to those seeking to develop their own intuitive gifts?

There is no way this can be told in a sentence or two!  There are tells, there are behavioral aspects of the supposed reader, and there are clear marks of professionalism that, if missing, tell the client to just walk on by.

For those who want to develop their own gifts (because we all have them), I recommend the book that started me on my road decades ago:  OPENING TO CHANNEL by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer.  It is clear, detailed, with exercises and cautions to keep even the newest seeker safe.

In your book You’ve Got the Magic, Who Needs a Genie?, you share your expertise on succeeding in the holistic expo circuit – what do you think is the most common mistake that newcomers to this field make?

Just because this is all kind of magic and mysteriousness to the average person, it is still a business and you have to treat it as such.  Know how to do your taxes.  Know how to advertise.  Know how to use social media.   Stick to a Code of Professional Ethics so your clients know they can trust you.  LOOK professional, not like a carnival actor.

If I can teach my readers the ins and outs of NORMAL business function and how it can (indeed, must) work in a metaphysical business, the book will have served its purpose!

Your work encompasses a wide range of areas, including tarot, mediumship, and spiritual counselling – do you have a particular specialism or area of focus that you are most passionate about?

Tarot has been my go to tool for decades (and now I’ve added oracle cards to the mix).  The cards tell stories, and people are very attuned to looking at pictures for clarification about information; it’s why picture books are so vital for young children.  Also, because I *am* a storyteller, I can turn the picture into allegory and, where appropriate, humor — thus giving the reading more depth and nuance than someone who just parrots the standard meaning of a card.

How do you believe that your writing and teaching have impacted your clients and readers, and what do you hope that they will take away from your work?

I’m an Elder.  I’m 70.  Who knows how long I have on this planet?  It is my responsibility to pass on absolutely everything I have learned and encourage my readers and clients to explore and find the joy in the work… which is why I always remind them, “I’m not special.  We’re all wired like the same house plan, and metaphysics is open and available to anyone who seeks it with the right heart and intention.  You can do what I do.”

What advice would you give to fellow authors who are seeking to write about spiritual or metaphysical topics, and how can they ensure that their work is both authentic and accessible to a wide audience?

Remember that it is not about you.  Too many books in the field are written to give the subliminal message that only the author is worth talking to about the subject (or the only person from whom you should get a reading or consultation).  A responsible and honest Metaphysician knows that they are passing on vital knowledge to the next generation of Seekers, and it is the author’s responsibility to make sure the information is accurate and useful to the reader, long after the last page is read and the cover is closed – even if the reader never has contact with the author in the future.
