Sarah JD masterfully blends darkness and hope, creating unforgettable stories with strong heroines that resonate deeply with readers.

In your stories, your characters often face intense trauma and darkness. How do you balance portraying their suffering with the hope and resilience that they eventually find?

It’s all about hope and determination. Self-preservation and a strong will to keep fighting through the darkest moments and making sure my characters get small meaningful moments that keep their hope in the forefront of their mind.

Your heroines are known for their strength, often emerging from harrowing situations. How do you approach writing these complex female characters, and what do you hope readers take away from their journeys?

I think being a mother helps me to get inside the heads of my female characters, my own desire for my daughters to be strong and never give up on their dreams and fighting for what they want, no matter how big or small it is.

So I want the same for my readers. To be inspired to keep pushing through the hard times, because there’s always the possibility of a happily ever after, even if the battle before hand is brutal.

Dark romance is a genre that explores difficult and sometimes controversial themes. How do you navigate the ethical considerations of writing such intense content while staying true to your artistic vision?

There’s a very fine line, and it’s easy to go down the rabbit hole, especially when writing shocking themes, so while I try to write to the dark romance market as much as I can, there are certain things I cannot write either because I do not personally understand it, or it goes against my beliefs.

Given the heavy emotional content of your books, how do you maintain your mental and emotional well-being during the writing process? Are there any specific practices or routines that help you stay grounded?

There are some scenes I’ve written that I’ve had to step away from and take a break. Surround myself with the love of my family and remind myself that even though someone has endured these situations somewhere in the world, I am okay and safe. My husband, especially, keeps me grounded.

Many of your stories involve themes of power dynamics and control. What do you think draws readers to these themes, and how do you ensure that your portrayal of these dynamics remains both impactful and responsible?

Power dynamics is a strong universal fantasy for many romance readers, especially in dark romance. It can be alluring, bordering on risk and danger, which I myself enjoy reading.

I do have a line though, and I struggle with certain types of dynamics such as severe bullying and abuse within the relationship itself. Personally I wouldn’t find certain things redeemable so I try to steer clear of that, and the one character I have written that steps over that line for me, had to have a lot of character growth to be worthy of redemption for me to be okay with writing it.

How has your personal experience and growth as an individual influenced the evolution of your writing, particularly in handling such dark and complex subject matter?

While I have never endured much of what my characters have, I am not unfamiliar with emotional trauma, pain, loss, and having to fight against the odds. There are many women out there who have endured so much more than I have, and they fight daily against their own darkness and the worlds they live in to strive for happiness. I don’t just write for myself. I write for them.
