In doing so, he elevates storytelling beyond entertainment, positioning it as a vehicle for connection, understanding, and, ultimately, transformation.

In this candid and deeply moving interview, Taylor Duran reflects on the experiences that shaped his voice, the emotional truths that drive his work, and his mission to create stories that matter. It is a conversation that reveals not only the mind of a writer, but the heart of a storyteller determined to make a difference—one reader at a time.

How did you develop Kayla Conrad’s character and her complex emotional journey?

Kayla’s complex character and emotional journey is loosely based on my life story and the traumatic events I have endured. Each novel is going to incorporate one type of traumatic experience I have. I found having a relatable character is one of the best things for the reader to be able to fall in love with and root for the success of the characters. Emotional investment is the highest form of attachment to your story especially when you’re building a complex world.

What inspired you to intertwine mental health themes with a fantasy setting?

When I was hospitalized for a mental health crisis I was in a group therapy session where I looked around and saw how every one of my peers looked and felt as broken, beaten and bruised as I did and I thought about sharing my story with the world just as my hero Selena Gomez. Her courage led me to share my own story.

How did your personal experiences influence the narrative of “Kayla Find Me”?

With everything I have gone through in my past and having felt as if no one knew what I was experiencing, I decided if I felt alone then someone else did too and that is unacceptable.

What challenges did you face while writing about deeply emotional and psychological themes?

The challenges I personally face were facing the traumatic events of my past and really working through them. However, it was one of the most healing things I have ever done.

Could you elaborate on the significance of angels and demons in Kayla’s story?

The demons in my story represent the struggles we all face and how sometimes they have a physical effect just as much as an emotional one. The demons are of her own making and something she has to face on her own, but with help. Just as we all do. The angels signify the good times and how powerful we are even when we don’t recognize it ourselves. We each have the power to conquer our past, but it is hard.

How do you plan to expand Kayla’s journey in future installments?

I plan on expanding her journey to becoming enlightened, but as she makes a step forward she gains or a new ability is revealed to her signalling her inner growth and externalizing it. As each of us make progress in our own struggles we too become stronger in our own ways.

What does the concept of self-healing and transformation mean to you in the context of this story?

It means to me that no matter how horrible the hill seems to be to climb sometimes it just means you need to take one step. After all, baby steps are still steps. No matter how hard healing is, it’s my personal opinion we all deserve it. This is an escapism story with real healthy coping skills written in. My story is being written to release pain through tears and unity.

How did you balance creating a fantastical world while staying true to real-world emotional struggles?

The balance wasn’t as difficult as I presumed it would be, because I lived through what my character’s going through. So, all I have to do is remember what I’ve felt in the past and mirror it within Kayla, while simultaneously building a world around it.

What makes “Kayla Find Me” stand out in the fantasy genre?

What makes it stand out is how realistic the emotional cost is and the effects are of how these traumatic experiences shape how individuals think and react to the world around them without making the reader feel hopeless.

What advice would you give to authors exploring sensitive topics like trauma and recovery?

My advice would be to incorporate their own personal experiences into the story, but make sure they remember to provide an underlying message of hope that’s stronger than any of the hardships being written.

How do you stay motivated and overcome writer’s block when tackling complex stories?

This one is difficult as I’m still struggling with this just a bit, but I look at it like a puzzle. You don’t build a puzzle all at once, first you separate the pieces, next form the border, then build the inside. At least, it’s the way I’ve always done a puzzle. It makes the process easier to tackle.

What tips do you have for aspiring authors looking to write relatable and emotionally impactful characters?

Write what you know, don’t try and write something you’ve never experienced or witnessed otherwise it becomes guessing and guessing is not authentic. The goal of creating something relatable is through vulnerability. Give the reader something to understand and identify with.
