Tara Frey – The Heart and Soul Behind Leaf & Literature

Tara Frey, Founder and CEO of Leaf & Literature, has a story that isn’t a grand epic; it’s a simple tale of passion and purpose. After graduating from college with a double major in English and Geography—a unique combination, indeed—Tara found herself surrounded by talented friends eager to publish their books but unsure of where to start. With her background and knowledge in publishing, she saw an opportunity to help them bring their dreams to life.

This vision led to the creation of Leaf & Literature, a boutique publishing house dedicated to guiding authors through every step of the publishing process. From the initial book idea to editing, interior design, formatting, cover illustration, and finally, publishing on platforms like Amazon, Tara and her team are there every step of the way.

At Leaf & Literature, the focus is on a personalized approach. As Head Book Guru and Publisher, Tara ensures that each author receives the attention and support they need to make their book the best it can be. The mission is to help both new and seasoned authors navigate the often complex world of publishing with confidence and ease.

Tara is deeply committed to helping authors achieve their dream of becoming published. Whether you’re just starting out or have multiple books under your belt, Leaf & Literature is here to support you at every stage of your writing journey.

What inspired you to start Leaf & Literature, and how did your background in English and Geography influence your approach to publishing?

What inspired you to start Leaf & Literature, and how did your background in English and Geography influence your approach to publishing? * I have been an avid reader my entire life, but I was always convinced that my addiction to books would simply be a hobby, instead of a career, so I made sure to major in my next passion, which is geography. Upon graduating college, however, I started applying for careers in publishing houses all over the country, but with my lack of experience at the time, I was not able to land anything. It wasn’t until a friend of mine encouraged me to start my own publishing company that I made that tough and crazy decision to run my own company and follow my dreams that way!

Could you share a memorable experience or success story from your journey with Leaf & Literature that encapsulates the essence of your commitment to aspiring authors? * When I started my business, I knew I wanted to publish novels, mainly. I was always under the impression that children’s books are harder to sell, but I did not want to just give up on children’s books! One of the books I decided to publish was written by a nine-year-old. I was excited to publish it, but I will be honest, I was also concerned since it is not an educational book that most parents enjoy reading to their children. Upon publishing, I realized that I had no reason to be concerned because it is now my best-selling book and it even sold for $2,500 at an auction!

Throughout your career, you’ve likely encountered various challenges in publishing and blogging. Can you discuss a particularly difficult obstacle you faced and how you overcame it? * I think my biggest obstacle is the realization that I am one person running a small publishing house in comparison to the large publishing houses that have numerous employees running the business. It made me feel insignificant and I wondered how I could possibly be successful compared to them. However, I often remind myself of my favorite quote, which is, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” So, I continue to remind myself that I CAN and I WILL.

As Head Book Guru and Publisher, what principles or values guide your interactions with authors, and how do you foster a supportive and collaborative environment within Leaf & Literature? * I ensure that I am always personable with my authors. I always want them to understand that if/when they need something, I am just a phone call away. I refuse to be one of those companies who expect messages first before they return a call several days later. I also always ensure I speak with them with the utmost respect, so they know that their work is always valued and appreciated!
