Crafting Narratives That Cultivate Connection
Tammy Gerhard weaves her counselling expertise into children’s stories, teaching empathy and kindness, fostering emotional growth, and building bridges between generations through relatable and heartwarming narratives.
Tammy Gerhard, an acclaimed author in children’s literature, has carved a niche for herself by weaving tales that transcend generations, infused with empathy, kindness, and connection. Her debut book, “Cocoa Hugs and Coffee Mugs,” has captivated readers with its heartwarming narrative of everyday moments, inspiring readers to embrace kindness and nurturing. Tammy’s commitment to these themes is evident not only in her writing but also in her roles as the co-owner of Silk City Coffee and the founder of Anavah Publishing, embodying her life’s mission: “Love Coffee, Love People.”
With a background in school counselling, Tammy’s transition to children’s literature was a unique path, enabling her to incorporate the compassion and insight she gained from her experiences as a counselor and a parent of three. Her stories offer essential tools for readers, both young and old, to navigate emotions, understand empathy, and foster human connections with grace and love. In an exclusive feature for Mosaic Digest magazine, Tammy reflects on her journey from counseling to storytelling and shares her passion for crafting narratives that inspire kindness and connection.
Tammy Gerhard’s masterful storytelling and commitment to nurturing empathy make her an invaluable voice in the world of children’s literature.
The community ethos from Silk City Coffee, where Tammy co-owns, serves as the backdrop for her storytelling. The simple yet profound acts of kindness she witnessed—sharing a warm drink or offering a smile—inspired “Cocoa Hugs and Coffee Mugs.” Through this story, Tammy hopes readers will find themselves and be motivated to extend love and kindness in their own communities, contributing to a more compassionate world despite differences.
Tammy’s experience as a counsellor and a parent greatly influences her storytelling, shaping the themes and lessons embedded in her books. She believes in providing children with the space and language to explore their emotions, ensuring they feel safe, seen, and loved, especially during moments of conflict or difference. Her stories often mirror real experiences and challenges of guiding children’s hearts, teaching them to be kind even when it’s difficult, and encouraging curiosity and grace toward differences.
Tammy employs relatable, emotionally rich narratives to make themes of kindness and compassion engaging for young readers. With the help of illustrator Hiruni Kariyawasam, she uses rhythm and warmth, along with expressive illustrations, to create stories that resonate deeply. Tammy’s goal is to spark empathy, invite conversation, and encourage kids to love people well, even when faced with messiness in real life.
The transition from counselling to writing children’s books was unexpected yet became a natural extension of Tammy’s calling. Realising that values of empathy and connection could be shared with children through storytelling prompted the creation of “Cocoa Hugs and Coffee Mugs.” Despite leaving counselling, Tammy’s work at Silk City Coffee continues drawing on similar skills—recognising people’s needs, asking questions, listening actively, and supporting others. The greatest reward is witnessing the ripple effect: families gathering, children engaging with stories, and communities growing kinder. Her role may have changed, but the heart behind her work remains steadfast—to love people well and cultivate spaces where everyone feels seen and cared for.
“As a parent, I’ve walked through the everyday challenges and joys of guiding our children’s hearts—navigating big feelings, learning empathy, and growing through mistakes.” – Tammy Gerhard
Looking ahead, Tammy Gerhard is set to expand her storytelling with new projects. Recently, she released the “I Love My Community Kids Activity Book,” an interactive companion to her original book, nurturing children’s engagement by encouraging them to become bridge-builders within their own communities. Additionally, Tammy is excited about a forthcoming picture book series starring her cat, King, aiming to explore emotions, resolve conflict, and embrace differences with kindness and connection.
Though Tammy also enjoys writing for adults on themes of encouragement and faith, creating children’s literature holds a special place in her heart. Her picture books are crafted for all ages, inviting both little ones and grown-ups into deeper conversation and reflection.
Ultimately, Tammy Gerhard wants each book to be a tool for connection, empathy, and growth. Through sharing cups of cocoa, adventures with King, or conversations inspired by a colouring page, Tammy hopes to inspire her readers to love their communities more profoundly.
