What’s the last great book you read?
What’s your favorite book no one else has heard of? I feel like everyone has heard of this book at this point but at one point in time it wasn’t really mainststream, I was obsessed with Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers.
Are there any classic novels that you only recently read for the first time?
Haha, no, I feel like I’ve read them all over and over again but I think that’s what makes you a good author but also
Who are your favorite writers? Are there any who aren’t as widely known as they should be, whom you’d recommend in particular?
I know Lauren Layne is a traditional author but she’s my go to for any rom com, she’s just so clever.
What do you read when you’re working on a book? And what kind of reading do you avoid while writing?
I can’t read the same genre I’m writing in so I have to actually read other genres, lately I’ve been reading Alien romance.
What moves you most in a work of literature?
When you have that epic moment where you know the character just had this huge epiphany and it just shifts the entire story, think Pride and Prejudice when Darcy finally shares his emotions.
What books and authors have impacted your writing career?
Julie Lessman changed my life, I loved her books but on top of that she also was so kind in responding to me when I really needed help as far as learning how to become an author, I quite literally owe my entire career to her.
What kind of reader were you as a child?
I read everything, CS Lewis was my favorite, Lion Witch and the Wardrobe was one of my ultimates growing up.
What do you plan to read next?
My next read is going to be a newer author from my publisher, I’m really excited to start but not sure I can share which one it is 😉
How hard is it to have a balance between being a mom and a writer, both full time: It’s difficult, mainly because I always have things to do, as I’m typing responses right now, I have extra kids at my house I’m watching on top of a toddler that refuses to eat his cheerios and my own child who I put in front of a nintendo just so I could finish this article. It’s a balance that you have to just reward yourself with, for example I made breakfast, a great breakfast mind you–I mean bacon. So I need to just celebrate those small victories. Any author out there struggling with the balance needs to understand that the small victories lead to big ones.
What’s next for you?
I’ve been screenwriting and have a few series optioned, it was a hard learning curve but I suggest any author wanting to get into it should try, it’s helped so much with my writing process.
What are you watching right now:?
I’m watching Back from the Brink on Viki and it’s been a really great show and has also helped me with learning comedic timing not just in shows but with books.
What’s your writing process like?
Survival, but also just trying to roll with the punches, I tend to need darkness to write, it sounds weird but I can’t have full lights on when I write and I need constant music on.
How many books do you write a year?
Typically, I write around 10 books a year if not more, it depends on my obligations to publishers but on top of that, obligations with series. This year was a learning year for me honestly, I’ve been writing over a decade but this year I had to complete a lot of older series which meant tabling a few projects.
What’s your current playlist?
So if you follow me on spotify you can have a playlist of every single book or series I’ve written in the last seven years. Right now I’m really digging my latest one I just posted, I like to use a lot of indie musicians too and help my readers find new people to support.
