What inspired you to start writing romance novels, and how has your journey evolved since you first fell in love with the written word?

Over twenty-five years ago (I still can’t believe that anything happened that long ago in my life), you’d always find me in front of the television listening to music stations or walking around with headphones on and music blasting in my ear. And not only that, but I’d also be singing at the top of my lungs to tunes of Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Brian Mcknight, and others. I just knew I’d be a singer one day! No one ever really told me that wasn’t my calling in life. LOL. I listened to almost any artist singing about love. That was my jam. Plus, isn’t love the topic of most music?

Anyway, during my teenage years, my mom would buy the Harlequin and Arabesque romance novels, but never read them. One day, with her permission, I read one and became hooked. By this time, my tenth-grade English teacher encouraged me in my writing and shared that I had a natural talent. I fiddled around with the idea of writing books by the time I started college, but decided I wanted to make money and matriculated through business school.

Twelve years ago, I published my first book, which was a devotional. However, the desire to write romance was also heavy on my heart. I started reading more often to discover there were Christian Fiction Romance Authors. At that point, I knew I’d found home and a place where I could start my journey as a romance author in a way that would also allow me to share my faith. I’m so thankful to God for the provision and opportunity—and for readers who support me by reading, reviewing, and sharing my stories. This is an awesome journey.

Can you share any specific experiences or moments in your life that have influenced the themes or characters in your stories?

I enjoy writing second chance romances. I had a general idea about writing a second chance romance with college sweethearts that would reunite on a vacation, but hadn’t quite come up with how I work out the plot. In 2021, I experienced sudden onsets of dizziness. At times, it felt like I was dying when the room would spin and I hadn’t moved from my seat or bed. I often had to squeeze my eyes shut in hopes that the spinning would cease—so scary. My doctor diagnosed the condition as vertigo and prescribed medicine and exercises for the dizziness.

After that experience, it hit me.

Boom!

I knew how I would write the story. I amped up the symptoms I experienced by a thousand and put my main character, Nina, in a situation where she had to determine what was most important to her and decide what to do about it. Then, With Every Breath, was born.

Sometimes we live like we have a limitless amount of time, but when faced with the reality of our mortality, we change, and that’s what happens to Nina. That’s also what I’d like readers to know after reading this book. Our time on earth is limited. If you love someone, tell them. Share your love and the beauty that is you with the world while you still can. And remember, above all else, that God loves you and is always with you. You are called for His purpose.

How do you get ideas for your books? What is your favorite part about the writing process?

One of the things I love most about writing is the opportunity to explore relationships between characters and to build an entire world centered around them. At the end of every story, my characters are real people to me, and the actors I choose as inspiration become the person in my book. I can never look at them the same again. Ha-ha. In my latest book, Batch of Love, I envision Tika Sumpter as Ginger Evans and Michael B. Jordan as Brock Pearson. But more importantly, I enjoy the fact that readers indulge my imagination by stepping into my world and reading my stories. What greater joy can there be in authorship than that? 😊

Every story idea starts with the characters and the question, “What if?” In Batch of Love, I created the characters, Ginger and Brock first. Second chance romances are my jam, so I knew going into this story that Ginger and Brock’s romance would be a second go round. The question for these characters was, “What if two high school sweethearts on the path of success bumped into each other? Literally. How would the trajectory of their lives change, if at all?

Ginger’s character, or at least her career in baking, was inspired by the time in my life when I tried the Keto diet and my exploration of Keto treats. Out of that experience, Ginger’s Goodies was born. I must admit that Ginger is a much better baker than I am though. Brock’s character had to be someone in opposition to her and her dreams, which gives us the lawyer working for the company who wants to destroy her business. And alas, we have Nailed It meets Who’s Got Mail in Batch of Love.

There are many different genres, what inspired you to write faith-based romance?

I fell in love with romance before I was saved and before I knew I wanted to become a writer. Early on in my writing career, I didn’t know anything about faith-based romance. It makes my heart happy to write in a genre I love and still honor my Heavenly Father.

What helps you to keep going even when things are tough?

The moment I get behind the keyboard and my fingers fly across the keypad, I’m in my happy place, operating in my purpose. I was created for this. Knowing that writing is knitted in the fabric of who I am pushes me forward.
