What inspired you to explore such diverse genres in your writing, from historical fiction to science fiction?
My inspiration for writing in diverse genres stems from various sources. Hollywood blockbusters like “The Vikings” and “Ivanhoe” sparked my interest in historical fiction. On the other hand, Captain Kirk’s adventures on the Starship Enterprise and the Star Wars franchise motivated me to write science fiction. My desire to branch out and try something different led to my contemporary short story collection. Lastly, I owe my thriller adventure novellas to the inspiration I found in Indiana Jones. These influences have shaped my writing journey, enabling me to explore and create across multiple genres.

How do you approach the research process for your historical novels, such as “Forgiving Nero” and “Crusader’s Path”?
To research my historical novels, I start by searching for movies set in the relevant era to get a feel for the period, including how people dressed and what they ate. This visual approach helps me immerse myself in the time period. I also read extensively about the era and looked for credible sources to ensure accuracy. Additionally, I explore documentaries and online resources to gather more context. This method enables me to create vivid and authentic settings for my stories, as seen in “Forgiving Nero” and “Crusader’s Path.”
What drew you to write about the First Crusade and Ancient Rome in your recent works?
My fascination with historical events is largely inspired by the big screen. Crusader-referenced movies like “Robin Hood” transported audiences back in time and triggered my interest in the First Crusade. Similarly, iconic films such as “Ben Hur” and its famous chariot race ignited ancient Rome’s allure. These cinematic experiences piqued my curiosity and motivated me to delve deeper into these captivating periods in history. Writing about the First Crusade and ancient Rome gave me the opportunity to share these intriguing times with my readers.
How do you balance historical accuracy with creative storytelling in your novels?
Balancing historical accuracy with creative storytelling involves carefully blending research and imagination. Once I establish the time frame, I select key events or chains of events to weave into my narrative. I then envision how my characters would realistically react in these situations, considering the different mindsets of the past. It’s crucial to remember that societal norms have evolved, so what might be acceptable today may not have been in the historical context. However, human nature has remained consistent throughout the centuries. I create engaging and authentic narratives by respecting historical accuracy while crafting compelling stories.
“My Business Administration background has provided a solid foundation for my success as an author, blending creativity with practical skills.” – Mary Ann Bernal
Can you share the challenges you faced while developing the complex characters in “Forgiving Nero”?
Developing the complex characters in “Forgiving Nero” was challenging due to the biased historical accounts by Tacitus, Suetonius, and Cassius Dio, who wrote long after Nero’s death. Their partiality and reliance on hearsay made it challenging to portray Nero accurately. To humanize Nero, I examined his early life, imagining the trauma of being separated from his mother and living among slaves. This approach helped me depict Nero as a product of his environment rather than a born monster. Balancing historical accuracy with creative storytelling allowed me to present a nuanced and empathetic portrayal of Nero.
What message or themes do you hope readers take away from “Crusader’s Path”?
“Crusader’s Path” is a story of redemption that sheds light on the horrors of war. The atrocities and loss of life should never be repeated, but history often does. I analyzed the characters’ mindsets to explore their reasons for joining the Crusades. My characters are flawed and do what they must to survive. Through their journeys, I hope readers understand the complexities of human nature and the impact of war on individuals. The themes of redemption, survival, and the cyclical nature of history are central to the narrative.
How has your background in Business Administration influenced your career as an author?
My background in Business Administration has significantly influenced my career as an author. The skills I acquired, such as strategic planning, project management, and marketing, have been invaluable in navigating the publishing world. Understanding market trends and audience preferences has helped me tailor my writing to meet readers’ expectations while maintaining my unique voice. Additionally, my business acumen has enabled me to effectively manage the financial aspects of my writing career, from budgeting for book launches to negotiating contracts.
