What inspired you to write children’s books, particularly the Octavia Can Do It! series?

I was inspired to write children’s books when my grandchildren were born.  I began reading to them at a young age as their parents did.  Since my grandchildren are biracial, I struggled to find books with characters they could relate to—so I decided to write one myself.

How do you incorporate your grandchildren’s experiences into your stories?.

As I watch them grow, I notice the unique qualities each of them possesses. Octavia is a spirited girl who enjoys being independent and believes she can handle things on her own without asking for help. In ‘Octavia Can Do It!’, she comes to realize that sometimes, it’s okay to ask for assistance.

What challenges have you faced as a children’s book author, and how have you overcome them?.

At first, I felt overwhelmed and unsure of where to begin or if I was even making the right choice—I never saw myself as an author. After extensive research, I decided to join a reputable hybrid publishing company that offered a children’s writing course. They also provided in-house editors, book designers, mastermind meetings, and author coaches to guide me through the writing journey.

Being part of this writing community gave me the confidence to write my first two books in the Octavia Can Do It!  series, with the third book set to be published in 2025.

Can you share a memorable reaction or feedback from a child who read your books?

One of my most cherished moments was when my oldest daughter, Camelia, and I hosted a reading and colouring session at a day summer camp. At the end of the session, a little girl handed me her coloring sheet with her name on it, beaming with a big smile. That simple yet heartfelt gesture truly touched my heart—I still have that coloring sheet to this day.

What do you think is the most important lesson children can take away from your books?

As I watched my grandchildren grow, I encouraged them to explore, discover new things on their own, and ask for help when needed. This is the message I hope to share with children through my stories.

How does your role as an Author Coach influence your own writing process?

As an Author Coach, I help aspiring children’s book authors bring their stories to life. Guiding them through their writing journey is not just about teaching.  It’s a two-way street that helps me improve my own writing of what stories connect with children and leave a lasting impact.

What advice would you give to aspiring children’s book authors looking to publish their first book? Every writer faces challenges, no matter where they are in their journey. Those challenges   can lead you to some amazing support. If you’re feeling stuck with your story, consider joining a writing group on social media or signing up for a class. It can really help to connect with others who get it. Also, look at different types of publishing companies and see what they offer to help you share your story. And most importantly, keep going!  Above all, don’t give up on writing – you have your own unique story to tell!
