What inspired you to pursue a career in naturopathic medicine?

Growing up, I was often frustrated by the standard five-minute doctor visit that ended with a prescription or an ineffective treatment. I felt like a number lost in the crowd. When I discovered naturopathic medicine, with its focus on the whole person, prevention, safer treatments, and a deeper understanding of the many factors affecting health, I knew this was my calling.

The connection I feel to God, Nature, the Universe, and my patients is the most fulfilling part of my work. Healing is ultimately about connection—reconnecting to the higher power within ourselves and within Nature. I began my undergraduate studies in a different major, then returned to complete three years of pre-med and five years of naturopathic medical school, all while raising a growing family. Going through medical school with five children was a wild adventure, but one I cherished. It has been a profound blessing to serve patients and to teach people around the world through my books.

Can you share the personal journey that led you to write Natural Home & Herbal Healing?

When deciding on a topic for my first book, I wanted to distill the most essential lessons from five years of naturopathic medical school into something practical and approachable for everyday readers. I envisioned a guided tour through the home, highlighting the healing resources available in each room.

The kitchen chapter focuses on healing foods, herbs, spices, and recipes; the bedroom explores sleep, meditation, and sexuality; and the bathroom chapter emphasizes healthy elimination, hydrotherapy, and herbal baths. Using the home’s floor plan as the framework created a unique, intuitive way to show readers that many powerful remedies are already within reach. I’ve been deeply gratified by how strongly readers have connected with this approach.

How do you see The 7 Pathways of Healing transforming patient care in cancer treatment?

The 7 Pathways of Healing offer a comprehensive lens for creating truly personalized treatment plans for chronic disease. In cancer care, conventional medicine often focuses almost exclusively on surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. The pathways help fill in the gaps, creating a supportive, integrative framework that surrounds patients with safety, resilience, and healing—both during and after conventional treatment.

What role do you believe hope plays in the healing process?

Hope is often dismissed as weak or wishful, but I see it as an active and powerful force. When hope is lost, the body loses much of its capacity to heal. Hope means holding a vision of a healthier future. Cancer & the Biology of Hope helps patients step into that future—mind, body, and spirit.

How does your advanced training in nutrition and herbal medicine shape your integrative approach to healthcare?

Whether one views life through the lens of evolution, creation, or a blend of both, the reality is that humans and plants are deeply compatible. Plants were created for, or evolved alongside, human beings as sources of food and medicine. Pharmaceuticals, by contrast, must be chemically altered to be patented and profitable, which often makes them less compatible with human physiology, more prone to side effects, and never getting to the root cause of the condition because the symptoms are masked.

Through years of training and experience, I help patients use food and herbs as safe, effective tools for true healing and repair, not just symptom management.

What was the most challenging aspect of writing Cancer & the Biology of Hope?

Cancer care is filled with technical jargon—terms like apoptosis, neoplasm, and angiogenesis. The challenge was finding the balance between clarity and accuracy: writing simply enough for a general audience while still introducing and explaining essential medical language patients encounter during diagnosis and treatment.

How do you balance scientific research with traditional and natural practices?

Naturopathic medicine is grounded in science as we currently understand it, while also drawing wisdom from ancient practices such as faith, prayer, fasting, healing touch, and meditation. These traditions may be difficult to quantify with modern instruments, but their healing power has been demonstrated through thousands of years of practical experience.

What advice do you have for readers seeking natural ways to reduce the side effects of cancer treatments?

There are many powerful, often overlooked methods for reducing the side effects of cancer treatment—some of which are completely free. Cancer & the Biology of Hope presents these options in a clear, compassionate, and empowering way.

How has your own lifestyle influenced the holistic principles you share in your books?

I strive to live holistically. Designing a meaningful life is much like designing an effective cancer treatment plan—you must consider all the pathways. I aim for dynamic balance among exercise, nutrition, relationships, work, breathing, study, laughter, and prayer.

What are the most common misconceptions about naturopathic medicine?

Awareness of naturopathic medicine varies widely around the world. In some regions, naturopathic physicians serve as primary care doctors alongside MDs; in other areas, people still ask, “What the heck is a naturopathic doctor?” There’s also a lingering stereotype of crystals, incense, and “woo-woo,” which doesn’t reflect the rigorous scientific training behind the profession.

Which aspect of your clinical experience has most influenced your writing?

My compassion for my clients. This work is deeply personal for me. I lost my younger sister to cancer over a decade ago, and that loss fuels my commitment to teach, support, and inspire patients and readers with everything that I am.

What guidance would you offer authors writing specialised or technical subjects for a general audience?

Imagine you’re speaking to your mother or your best friend. You’re not trying to impress them—you’re trying to communicate with clarity, warmth, and love.
