What inspired you to write stories centered around themes of love, resilience, and cultural identity?
Love, resilience, and cultural identity greatly shape our lives and identities. They shape how we navigate relationships, how we heal, and how we grow into the best versions of ourselves. I’ve always been fascinated by the way each person’s love story unfolds—how one woman’s journey to finding love while learning to fully embrace herself can differ so profoundly from another’s. The most rewarding part isn’t just the happily-ever-after; it’s the twists, turns, and hard-won lessons along the way. The destination is just the cherry on top.
How do you approach creating such multifaceted characters like Mia, Preston, Patience, and Lennox?
I write characters that reflect all the complex, beautiful, and messy parts of being human—because that’s real life. We all have moments where we act on impulse, question our choices, or wish for a do-over. My characters make mistakes. They love fiercely. They stumble, they grow, and sometimes, they don’t get it right the first time (or the second). But through their journeys, I want my readers to see themselves—to feel validated, challenged, and ultimately, hopeful. A messy main character always leads to a satisfying arc, and most importantly, reminds us not to be too hard on ourselves.
Do you draw from personal experiences or observations when crafting the emotional depth of your characters?
Absolutely. The heart of my stories beats with truth—my own, as well as those of the people I love. Many of the emotional beats, conflicts, and even character flaws are inspired by real-life experiences. That’s what makes the emotions feel raw and unfiltered on the page. And what I love most is when readers tell me, “That scene? That moment? It felt so real.” Because often, the most unbelievable, jaw-dropping moments in my books are the ones that actually happened in real life.
How do you find a balance between exploring meaningful topics like healing and self-discovery while keeping the romance alive in your novels?
Romance is never the issue—I live and breathe it! In fact, I ghostwrite romantic and intimate scenes and coach other writers on how to craft unforgettable love stories. But love isn’t just about passion; it’s about growth. I used to be protective of my characters—afraid to put them through too much hardship. But the truth is, love means something deeper when it’s forged in fire. It’s about pushing past fears, learning to trust, and choosing each other through every challenge. When readers become emotionally invested—when they need to see these characters win—that’s when a book becomes unforgettable.
Can you describe your writing process and how you develop the chemistry between your protagonists?
I’ve learned that creating chemistry takes time. It’s not supposed to be cookie cutter because that’s boring as hell. I love playing with contrast: the thrilling chase of a slow burn, the electric pull of enemies-to-lovers, or the bittersweet ache of two people who know they’re meant to be, but timing isn’t on their side. True romance lies in the details: the romantic gestures, the hour-long conversations, the way two people learn to show up for each other, and the building of trust brick by brick. When you get that foundation right, the love scenes aren’t just steamy—they’re deeply satisfying, because readers have felt every moment leading up to them. Upping the ante allows characters to discover new ways to express their desire and appreciation for one another.
What role does your cultural background play in shaping your narrative and characters?
Representation is everything. Some of my favorite stories involve main characters from cultures and heritages that are different from mine. I want my stories to reflect the vast and vibrant experiences within the African diaspora. In Beauty Beheld, Patience was involved with Daniel, a Haitian American man. Mistletowed brings together Mia, a Black and Mexican heroine, with Preston, a Black and Cuban love interest. These aren’t just details—they shape how these characters love, how they view family, and how they navigate their worlds. Diversity in romance isn’t about checking a box; it’s about telling rich, layered, authentic stories that entertain, educate, and celebrate all kinds of love.
What advice would you give aspiring authors who are passionate about writing contemporary romance or stories that inspire personal growth?
As a book coach, I get to share this advice every day! Think back to who you were at the lip of your journey—before you knew what you know now. How did you feel? What did you need to hear? What doubts did you wrestle with? The most powerful stories come from that place of raw honesty. Your unique experiences, your voice, your perspective—that’s your literal superpower. Don’t be afraid to lean into it. You’re qualified to write stories that the world needs to hear and in a way that only you can convey it. You’ve got this!
