What book or books made you want to start writing?
Two books: The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A McKillip and Road to Paradise Island by Victoria Holt. Those have stuck with me forever.
Of the books you have published, which are your favorite?
I love writing series! So, I have a lot. My two favorites are the Dream Walker books (5 books) and Age of Wizards (2 books). Dream Walker has been an intense series to write. The last book of the series just came out (Light of the World) in ebook and paperback. It’s a true good v. evil series.
How long does it take you to write a book?
It depends. If I’m focused, I can usually write one in about 3 months. But there are times when life gets in the way or I have other things I need to focus on or I’m just stuck and it takes me longer. I know I can write upwards of 30,000 words in a month, but that takes a tremendous amount of discipline and self-motivation. I generally give myself six months to write and edit a book that is in the 80-100k word count range.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a brand-new series that is fairy tale retellings. I have ten books planned in that series. I’m also working on a new stand-alone that is about a sorcerer and his daughter.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
When I’m not writing, I like to read (of course!). I also love watching hockey in the winter and baseball in the summer. When the weather is nice, I like to sit outside in our backyard oasis.
Which writers — working today do you admire most?
I have a long list! I’ll give you my top five: Karen Marie Moning, Gena Showalter, Patricia A. McKillip, Sarah J. Maas, Anne McCafrey
What do you read when you’re working on a book? And what kind of reading do you avoid while writing?
I mostly read fantasy. But I read ALL the time, even when I’m writing. I’m currently on a binge reading of Fae books. I try to avoid books that will influence my writing, like similar genre.
What genres do you especially enjoy reading?
Fantasy (all kinds—epic, high fantasy, fairy tale, historical, dark, urban, etc.!) and also Fantasy Romance.
Who is your favorite fictional hero or heroine?
Mac from the Fever books. She has an amazing character arc. I also really loved Katniss (Hunger Games). Overall, I really like strong female protagonists.
What book are you planning to read next?
The Cruel Prince (Holly Black)
