What inspired you to start writing romance novels, and how did you develop your unique style that combines steamy romance with small-town charm?
I’ve always had a love for storytelling. It wasn’t until I started reading romance – on Wattpad of all places – that I knew it was the genre I was meant to be in. There are so many complex emotions involved in relationships and not enough are shown in romance novels. I felt drawn to put them on the page.
Deciding to set my debut series in a small-town was as natural as writing – making them steamy, well, that was a given.
Can you share more about the Montgomery Brothers of Montana series and what readers can expect from the upcoming books?
I really wanted to create a full circle moment for my first series. You may notice my prequel, Only by You, starts with Julie and Clayton who are the (future) parents of the Montgomery brothers. Their love story is the real root of the series. And their dream is what I showcase in the bulk of the series through their children’s eyes. Think of it as the extended epilogue of a lifetime. And I fully intend to bring us back to that start: Julie and Clayton.
Lots of heat, humor, small-town drama, and of course, happily ever afters are coming for the Montgomery family.
How do you create such compelling and relatable characters in your stories?
I always try to stay as authentic as possible when writing any character. If it doesn’t feel right for the character, or me as the author – no matter the plot – I won’t write it.
Take book two in my series, Found by You, for instance. That was the first book I completed in the series even though I knew it wasn’t meant to be book one. What you read today is a polished and edited version of the very first draft. I changed nothing (shocking, I know) because it was the most authentic story I could ever create for Duke and Maci.
My creative voice is what makes my characters so relatable.
What is your writing process like, and how do you balance the elements of romance, humour, and drama in your novels?
I’m what they call a ‘pantser.’ I fly by the seat of my pants, so to speak. I’ll have a tiny bubble of an idea – whether it’s the meet cute, a major event, or even the ending – and I run with that bubble like a bandit until it forms into a complete story. It’s a bit chaotic, truthfully.
I also try to stay very aware of pacing in my stories – being able to shift between the lighter and heavier moments brings out a more natural flow to the drama and humor within the story context.
As a romance enthusiast, what are some of your favorite romance tropes, and how do you incorporate them into your writing?
He falls first (I mean, who doesn’t love a man who falls at your feet?) and found family, one of the most relatable tropes in romance, I believe. Who hasn’t felt a disconnect with their blood relatives at some point in their life?
No matter what I write, one or both will sneak their way into my stories, I can’t seem to control it. Nor do I want to.
Can you give us a sneak peek or any hints about your next project or upcoming releases?
I’m actively writing book three in the Montgomery Brothers of Montana series, and I will say, I have never had a grumpier male lead character. Beau and Callie’s story has truly been a joy to write and I can’t wait for readers to get their hands on this one early 2025.
Readers can expect the following tropes in book three, Backed by You: grumpy x sunshine, wounded veteran, he falls first, (secret) millionaire female lead, service dog, a splash of romantic suspense, small-town charm (and gossip!), and heartfelt family moments with the entire Montgomery clan.
