What inspired you to write historical romance set in rural Australia, and how do you research the era and setting?

I grew up in rural North Queensland, Australia so it seemed natural for me to want to write books set in and around the area.  So much of my research comes from local history books and stories that have been passed down for generations.

How do you approach creating characters with emotional depth and complex pasts, like Amelia and Sebastian?

Inspiration for my characters usually comes from people I know, or family members and their personal experiences.

“Love isn’t money or possessions. It is the ability to feel whole in the arms of the one you adore.”
― Faye Hall, Behind the Mask.

How do you balance romance and suspense to keep readers engaged throughout your novels?

As a child, I watched Agatha Christie movies with my mother and loved the mystery and suspense, I just always wished they had a bit more romance.  My mother encouraged me to write ‘my version’ of these stories, and I’ve been doing that ever since.

What challenges do you face when writing about sensitive topics, such as trauma and recovery, in your stories?

As a survivor of domestic violence myself, I try to be sensitive to recognising how certain events might trigger some people.

“I enjoy the way Faye Hall writes about Queensland rural towns during the 18th century, which helps her readers and me to understand and learn about that period.” – Jenny, Goodreads Review

How do you develop tension and mystery in your plots while maintaining a believable romantic arc?

All relationships face obstacles, so I put my characters to the test in the most believable ways possible, pulling them together romantically as the story develops.

Which historical details or cultural elements do you find most important to include in your novels?

I always try to emphasise that women in North Queensland often broke tradition by wearing trousers/jeans.  It might not have been socially acceptable, but in our heat, it was practical with the work they did.

How do you decide when to reveal secrets about a character’s past to maximise emotional impact?

I just letthe characters tell me when the time is right.

What inspired the creation of the A Blemished Tale series, and how do you plan its continuation?

I’m a massive fan of Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and the Beast, and that’s where I got the inspiration for the series from.  The plan is to have a collection of books, all with scarred characters, trying to find their HEA.

What writing tips would you give to aspiring authors looking to write historical romance or suspense?

Do your research, but be prepared to get criticised for it, as not everyone sees history the same way you will.

What advice would you offer to aspiring authors about developing unique and compelling characters?

Listen to your characters – they will guide you along in the story.

How do you maintain authenticity in dialogue while ensuring it serves both character and plot?

To be honest, I just write what I see playing as a movie in my mind.  I also try to remember that our ancestors didn’t always ‘talk with a plum in their mouth’.

How do you balance pacing and character development to keep both the romance and suspense effective?

I think of a story as a journey, so I tend to build up a bit before the story evolves.  As far as the Romance side of the story goes, I use some of my own personal experience in relationships as a guide.
