What first inspired you to begin writing stories centred on young women facing life-changing challenges?

I, myself, have faced life-changing challenges. I wanted to put a little bit of myself into each story I write. I wanted my readers to believe that they can overcome anything as long as they believe in themselves.

Your books often explore themes of resilience and personal transformation; how do you approach developing characters who grow through hardship?

Part of life is growing and facing challenges. How you deal with those challenges shapes who you become. I approach each character as if it were myself, and how I would deal with each situation they find themselves in.

How much of your own life experience influences the emotional journeys of your protagonists?

A lot of my life experience influences the emotional journey of my characters. There is a bit of me in each of my stories.

Among your published titles, which story was the most difficult to write, and what made it so challenging?

I would have to say At Their Mercy was the most difficult to write because it was a multi-person point of view. But it was also one of the most fun because I had to make it flow just right.

Many of your books involve starting over in new environments; what draws you to this recurring theme?

I moved around a lot growing up, so it is what I know. I think that is part of what makes me such a good storyteller, my life experience.

When crafting intense or traumatic scenes, how do you balance realism with sensitivity for the reader?

Balancing realism and sensitivity can be difficult. I always try to take a reader’s feelings into consideration while also keeping the scene real. I think it is essential to let a reader know there may be triggers, so I try to put that at the beginning of my books so they are aware going in. That way, if they can’t handle a situation, they know.

What do you hope readers feel or take away after finishing one of your novels?

I hope readers can feel the love I pour into each of my books. Each one holds a special place in my heart.

What advice would you offer to aspiring authors who want to write emotional, character-driven stories but struggle to begin?

Draw on your own life experience and incorporate it into your writing. Your life is a story in itself.
