JoAnn Dickinson discusses her transition from real estate to writing, her self-publishing journey, and how she blends STEAM, emotional growth, and adventure into beloved children’s books that inspire young minds.
JoAnn M. Dickinson has crafted an enchanting literary universe where imagination, emotional growth, and childlike wonder intertwine. Once deeply rooted in the structure and strategy of real estate, Dickinson has since bloomed into an award-winning children’s author, self-publishing more than a dozen titles that champion bravery, kindness, and curiosity.
Her publishing imprint, Two Sweet Peas Publishing—named in honour of her grandchildren—has become the home of multiple beloved series, including The Young Rylee Series, Lou’s Zoo Series, Amelia Ophelia Series, John’s Camping Series, and her middle-grade debut Secrets of Hawthorne Manor. Each story is crafted with warmth and adventure, blending playful plots with themes of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) learning and social-emotional growth.
Speaking with Novelist Post, Dickinson opened up about her creative transformation, the inspirations behind her stories, and the joys and hurdles of building an independent publishing brand from the ground up.
“My career in real estate was fulfilling,” she reflects, “but as life changed, I found myself drawn toward something more creative.” That pull led her to storytelling—initially a quiet passion that turned into a new career. It was her grandchildren who sparked the shift. Recounting their adventures, such as a first camping trip, inspired Dickinson’s debut picture book, I Love To Go Camping. “I could see the wonder on his face,” she recalls of her grandson. “That pure joy and curiosity sparked something in me.”
JoAnn Dickinson crafts stories with heart and imagination, empowering children through thoughtful themes, vibrant storytelling, and unforgettable characters.
Serendipity, Dickinson explains, plays a subtle yet central role in her books. “Children naturally relate to surprise discoveries. Whether it’s a mysterious box, a ghostly encounter, or a sprinkle who dreams of being a cookie, these moments open the door to bigger lessons—like friendship, courage, and finding one’s purpose.”
Despite a steep learning curve, Dickinson embraced the challenges of self-publishing. With the guidance of an author coach and a trusted creative team—editors, illustrators, designers—she gained control over every step of the publishing process. “It was empowering,” she says. “And naming the imprint after my grandkids made the journey even more personal.”
When writing for different age groups, Dickinson adapts her approach. Her middle-grade chapter book, Secrets of Hawthorne Manor, required a deeper exploration of character development and plot structure. “Picture books rely on illustrations to carry the story. With middle-grade, it’s all about the words—painting scenes with imagination. It was challenging but deeply rewarding.”
“Writing has always been a quiet passion that taps into a different part of who I am.” — JoAnn Dickinson
Through all her stories, she maintains a delicate balance: fun and light-hearted on the surface, but with deeper messages underneath. “I start with heart. I build imaginative settings and characters that spark wonder. Once the reader is engaged, I gently introduce themes like acceptance or resilience. The lessons unfold through the characters’ growth.”
Her Lou’s Zoo series is particularly personal. “As a child, I was quiet and often felt like I was on the outside. I didn’t see creativity being celebrated. That’s why Lou’s Zoo is close to my heart. It shares a message I would’ve loved to hear growing up—that being different is something to embrace.”
Though she first used YouTube to connect with readers, Dickinson’s online presence has evolved. “YouTube helped me build a personal connection in the early days, sharing behind-the-scenes moments and writing tips. These days, I focus on platforms where I’ve built strong reader communities, but YouTube was an important stepping stone.”
“I never write to teach a lesson; those elements are part of the character’s journey.” — JoAnn Dickinson
To aspiring authors looking to self-publish, Dickinson offers practical wisdom: “Don’t cut corners. Invest in your book—good editing, quality illustrations, strong design. Find a team that understands your vision. When you create something meaningful and well-crafted, it stands the test of time.”
JoAnn Dickinson continues to nurture curiosity and compassion through stories that resonate with children and adults alike. Her journey from real estate to the world of children’s literature is a testament to the magic that can happen when creativity meets courage—and when one follows the quiet pull of passion.
